How to Choose the Right Interior Design for Your Room Size

The first rule of room interior design: the design must fit how the room is actually used, not how it looks in a render. A small living room designed to look large in photographs but equipped with furniture that is too small to sit comfortably in fails its occupants every day. A large master bedroom that is all visual drama but no practical storage fails its occupants every morning.

For small rooms (under 120 sq ft): The three strategies that actually work are vertical storage (floor to ceiling wardrobes, tall cabinets, shelving above door height), multipurpose furniture (storage ottomans, beds with hydraulic base storage, desks that fold away), and consistent light colours on all major surfaces (walls, floor, large furniture). Mirror placement that reflects natural light is effective in very small rooms but must be deliberate — a mirror facing a blank wall adds nothing; a mirror facing a window multiplies the sense of space.

For medium rooms (120–200 sq ft): These rooms have enough space for proper furniture scale but are often furnished with pieces that are either too small (left over from a previous smaller home) or too large (bought for the square footage rather than for how the room actually feels). The correct furniture scale for a 12×14 foot living room is a sofa between 200 and 250cm long, a coffee table between 100 and 140cm, and a rug between 200×300cm and 240×340cm. Smaller than this and the room looks underfurnished; larger and it looks crowded.

For large rooms (over 200 sq ft): The risk in large rooms is that they feel empty or transactional — like a hotel lobby rather than a home. The solution is not more furniture but furniture groupings that create smaller, more intimate zones within the larger space. A seating area anchored by a large rug. A reading corner with a specific chair and lamp. A dining zone defined by a pendant light directly above it. Multiple zones, each with its own identity.

Suntew's Expert Take

At Suntew, we believe good interior design starts with the right questions. Over 300+ projects in Bangalore and Mangalore, we have helped hundreds of families navigate material choices, budget planning, and contractor management. The most common mistake clients make is starting work without a fixed-price contract — always insist on a detailed BOQ (Bill of Quantities) with material specifications before signing any agreement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it worth hiring an interior designer in Bangalore?

For most homeowners, yes. A good interior designer saves money by recommending the right materials at the right price, prevents costly mistakes, and manages contractors. Suntew's design fee is often offset by the savings on materials and rework that an experienced team can avoid.

What should I ask an interior designer before hiring them?

Ask for: a fixed-price contract with BOQ, their project timeline commitment, references from recent projects, and who will supervise day-to-day work at your site. Ask specifically if they use subcontractors or their own team. Suntew uses in-house trained carpenters and provides a single point of contact for every project.

How do I make my home look expensive on a budget?

Focus on lighting, paint, and decluttering first — these have the highest visual impact per rupee. Replace builder-grade door handles and switches with quality branded ones (Legrand, Schneider). Add one statement piece — a large mirror, an accent wall, or a pendant light — rather than many small decorative items.

Ready to start your project? Suntew Interior Designers offers a free consultation and 3D design preview — no payment required until you approve the design. Call +91 89515 00340 or 9606230962, or fill in our contact form.
