Interior Designer vs Interior Decorator — The Real Differences

The confusion between interior designer and interior decorator is genuine — and genuinely matters when you are hiring. Hiring an interior decorator when you need an interior designer (or vice versa) is like hiring an architect when you need a structural engineer. The skills overlap but the disciplines are distinct.

An interior designer works with the physical structure of a space. They specify building materials, coordinate civil work and carpentry, manage electrical and ceiling contractors, design space layouts that may require wall changes, and oversee a construction process from brief to handover. In India, a full-service interior designer handles what in the West would be divided between architect, interior architect, and project manager.

An interior decorator works with the contents of a space after the construction is complete. They select furniture, choose textiles and fabrics, coordinate colours, source artworks, arrange accessories, and style a space to look beautiful. No construction involved, no contractors managed, no material specifications for structural work.
