Living Room Interior Design — The Foundation Principles
The living room is the home's most public space and the one most likely to be seen by guests. It is also the space that sees the most daily use — family evenings, weekend gatherings, daily television, and in many Bangalore homes, the primary work-from-home location as well. Good living room design serves all of these uses simultaneously without looking like it was designed for any of them specifically.
Layout first, always. The most common living room design mistake is placing furniture around the walls and leaving the centre of the room empty. This feels institutional — like a waiting room. Better: place the sofa and coffee table as an island in the room, with space behind the sofa between it and the wall. This creates a conversation grouping that faces inward rather than outward, and makes even a large room feel intimate and inhabited.
The TV wall as the design anchor. In most Indian living rooms, the TV wall is the visual focal point. Designing this wall well — with a considered panel treatment, concealed cables, integrated storage, and appropriate lighting — establishes the design language for the entire room. A poorly designed TV wall drags down everything around it regardless of how much effort went into the rest of the room.
Lighting in three layers. Ambient (the ceiling/cove circuit), task (reading lamp, floor lamp), and accent (LED strip behind TV, spotlight on artwork). These three layers on three separate circuits give the living room complete flexibility — bright for family gatherings, dim and warm for evening television, dramatically lit for entertaining. A single overhead light has one mode and it is rarely the right one for every occasion.
The rug as the zone anchor. A living room rug should be large enough that at least the front legs of every sofa in the grouping sit on it. This is almost always larger than the rug most people buy. The correct rug size for a standard Bangalore living room sofa grouping is 240×340cm minimum. Smaller rugs float in the room without anchoring anything and make the furniture look randomly placed.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the average cost of living room interior design in Bangalore?
A basic living room interior — TV unit, false ceiling, and paint — starts at ₹45,000. A complete living room transformation with feature wall, modular sofa area, and designer flooring ranges from ₹80,000 to ₹2 lakh depending on size and materials.
What colour is best for a small living room in Bangalore apartments?
Light neutrals — off-white, greige (grey-beige), or soft sage green — make small living rooms feel larger. Avoid dark colours on all four walls. One accent wall in a deeper tone (navy, forest green, or burnt orange) adds depth without closing the space. Suntew recommends Asian Paints Royale or Berger Silk Breatheasy for Bangalore apartments.
How do I make a small living room look bigger?
Use light colours, mirrors, and vertical storage to create the illusion of space. A wall-mounted TV unit frees up floor space. Suntew also recommends light-coloured 800x800mm tiles laid diagonally, which visually expands the room.
