PVC False Ceiling Design — Modern Styles, Benefits and Cost Guide
PVC false ceilings are gaining popularity in India — particularly in kitchens, bathrooms, and humid coastal areas. Here is what you need to know before choosing.

What Is a PVC False Ceiling?

A PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) false ceiling uses extruded plastic panels — typically 250–400mm wide — that interlock and are fixed to a metal grid suspended from the slab. The panels come in a wide range of colours, textures, and finishes. Installation is faster than gypsum board, requires no skim coat or paint, and the panels are individually replaceable if damaged.

PVC ceilings have been used in commercial spaces for decades. Their adoption in residential interiors has grown significantly because of their water resistance and ease of installation — particularly attractive in humid climates like Mangalore and in wet areas like kitchens and bathrooms.

Where PVC Ceilings Are Appropriate

Kitchens: PVC is inherently moisture-resistant and easy to wipe clean. In Indian kitchens where oil, steam, and masala vapour accumulate on surfaces, a PVC ceiling that can be wiped down is practical. It does not require repainting every few years as gypsum does in kitchen environments.

Bathrooms: The definitive application for PVC ceilings. No moisture absorption, no mildew, completely wipeable. In Indian bathrooms where the ceiling is regularly exposed to steam, PVC outperforms gypsum significantly in longevity and maintenance.

Balconies and utility areas: Semi-outdoor and utility areas benefit from PVC's weather resistance.

Mangalore and coastal Karnataka: The high ambient humidity of coastal Karnataka makes PVC an attractive alternative to gypsum in any room, not just wet areas. Gypsum in a Mangalore home requires more frequent repainting and is more vulnerable to humidity. PVC avoids both issues.

Where Gypsum Is Still Better

Living rooms and bedrooms in standard apartments: gypsum's visual quality — the smooth flat surface with no visible panel joints — is significantly better than PVC. Good-quality PVC has minimal visible joints, but the panels never disappear completely the way gypsum does. For the primary living and sleeping spaces in a home, gypsum creates a more premium aesthetic.

Complex shapes: gypsum can create curves, angles, and detailed profiles that PVC cannot. The coffered ceilings, tray ceilings, and ornate POP profiles that distinguish premium Bangalore living rooms cannot be replicated in PVC.

Frequently Asked Questions

PVC is better suited to kitchens, bathrooms, and coastal/humid environments. For living rooms, gypsum board creates a more premium smooth appearance. PVC panel joints are visible and limit design options.
Rs.40–70 per sqft including installation. For a 15x12 foot living room, a PVC ceiling costs Rs.7,200–12,600 — approximately 40% less than gypsum.
Visible panel joints, limited design flexibility (no curves or complex profiles), less premium appearance than gypsum, and some PVC types show heat distortion over time near cooking areas.

Suntew's Expert Take

False ceilings are one of the most dramatic yet affordable ways to transform any room, and Suntew has installed 300+ false ceilings across Bangalore and Mangalore. We work with gypsum board, PVC panels, and wood-finish panels. Our standard gypsum false ceiling with cove lighting costs ₹55–₹75 per sq ft in Bangalore, including material and labour. For Mangalore homes, we recommend PVC or moisture-resistant gypsum due to coastal humidity.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cost of false ceiling installation in Bangalore?

Gypsum false ceiling costs ₹55–₹75 per sq ft in Bangalore, including frame, board, finishing, and cove lighting. For a standard 150 sq ft living room, expect ₹8,000–₹12,000 for a basic design. Decorative designs with multiple levels or beam effects cost more.

Which is better — gypsum or PVC false ceiling?

Gypsum is better for Bangalore as it allows fine detailing, smooth finishes, and is easy to paint. PVC is better for Mangalore and other humid coastal areas as it is water-resistant and mould-proof. Suntew recommends moisture-resistant gypsum for bathrooms and kitchens in both cities.

How long does false ceiling installation take?

A standard living room false ceiling (150–200 sq ft) takes 2–3 working days. Larger homes with multiple rooms take 5–7 days. Suntew team handles everything including masking furniture and cleaning up after installation.
