Vastu Shastra is not a superstition. It is a 3,000-year-old Indian science of spatial arrangement — a system for organising home spaces in ways that align with natural energy flows, solar orientation, and human biorhythms. Many of its principles have precise environmental justifications. A well-applied Vastu plan produces a home that is cooler in summer, better ventilated, more naturally lit, and more psychologically restful. Suntew applies Vastu as a standard option on every project across Bangalore and Mangalore.

The Core Vastu Principles for Room Placement

Living roomNorth or EastMorning light; welcoming energy for guests

Vastu directions are from the perspective of standing in the centre of the home and looking outward. Apply within your apartment's existing structure — structural changes are not necessary.

Vastu for the Bedroom — Practical Application

Bed orientation: Head pointing south when sleeping — universally recommended. East is also good. North is specifically avoided. The scientific reasoning: the Earth's magnetic field runs north-to-south, and sleeping with your head pointing north creates a repulsion effect that disrupts sleep quality over time. Many people who change bed orientation from north-facing to south-facing report improved sleep within days. This is verifiable and costs nothing to apply.

Mirror placement: Avoid mirrors directly facing the bed from the sleeping position. Mirrors on wardrobe sliding doors are acceptable — they face you when you are standing, not lying down. A mirror on the wall directly in front of where you sleep is considered to disturb rest by creating a sense of alertness or surveillance.

Colours by direction: South-facing bedroom — warm reds, oranges, and earthy tones. East-facing — greens, light blues. West-facing — grey, silver, off-white. North-facing — earthy yellows, warm beige. These are not rigid rules — they are starting points that can be modified for personal preference.

Beam avoidance: Avoid placing the bed directly under a structural beam — this is both a Vastu concern and a practical psychological one. Sleeping under a visible beam creates a subconscious sense of weight or pressure. False ceilings that cover beams resolve this completely.

Vastu for the Kitchen

Hob direction: Cook facing east when possible. In most kitchens this means the hob on the east or southeast wall. East-facing cooking is considered auspicious and has a practical benefit: morning east light falls directly onto the cooking surface, reducing the need for artificial lighting during breakfast preparation.

Kitchen placement: The southeast corner of the home (Agneya — corner of fire) is the traditional Vastu location for the kitchen. In apartments where this isn't possible, the northwest is acceptable. Never the northeast (pooja room corner) or the southwest (master bedroom corner).

No toilet adjacent to kitchen: The kitchen and bathroom should not share a wall — both from a hygiene standpoint and a Vastu one. In apartments where this cannot be avoided due to fixed plumbing positions, ensure proper ventilation and a solid wall (not a glass partition) between them.

Vastu for the Pooja Room

Location: The northeast corner (Ishaan) is the most auspicious for the pooja room — this corner receives morning light from both north and east windows, making it naturally well-lit for morning puja. It is also considered the direction of water (Varuna) and is considered to invite spiritual positive energy into the home.

Idol direction: The deity faces east or west, so the devotee also faces east or west during prayer. Avoid north-facing idols (devotee faces north). Never south-facing idols. The most auspicious idol direction for a home pooja is east-facing.

Ceiling: A slight triangular or pyramidal ceiling profile above the mandir is considered ideal — this shape is used in temple gopurams for its acoustic resonance properties, which enhance the experience of chanting. In apartments, a stepped false ceiling profile above the pooja alcove creates a similar ceremonial effect.

Materials: White or light yellow marble is most auspicious. Teak wood for the mandir structure. Brass fixtures. Light — 2700K warm white LED — mimicking traditional oil lamp light.

Vastu for the Living Room

Entrance direction: East or north-facing entrances are most auspicious — they receive morning light and positive energy. South-facing entrances are considered the least favourable and can be partially mitigated by strong natural lighting and a welcoming foyer treatment.

Seating arrangement: The head of the family should sit facing east or north. Guests should sit facing the host — typically south or west. Arrange seating so the primary host position faces east or north when possible.

Heavy furniture placement: Sofas and large furniture pieces should be placed against the south or west walls — leaving the north and east sides of the living room lighter and more open. This allows morning light from the east and north to enter the room unobstructed.

Applying Vastu in a Modern Apartment

The most common anxiety about Vastu in apartments: "The kitchen is already in the wrong corner. The bathrooms are fixed. I can't change the structure." This is correct — and this is where experienced designers who know Vastu make the difference. Not every Vastu principle requires structural changes. Most can be applied through furniture placement, colour choices, mirror placement, bed orientation, and pooja room positioning within the existing layout.

Suntew applies Vastu as a standard option — not as an upsell — within your apartment's existing physical constraints. We apply what we can within the structure, and we are honest about what the structure cannot accommodate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Vastu actually make a difference in modern homes?
Many Vastu principles have practical environmental justifications: south-facing beds align with the earth's magnetic field and improve sleep; northeast pooja rooms receive optimal morning light; southeast kitchens benefit from morning east light. The energy principles are debated; the practical spatial and environmental principles are sound and observably beneficial.
What if my apartment is not Vastu-compliant — can it be fixed?
Yes, partially. Most Vastu adjustments don't require structural changes. Bed reorientation, furniture placement changes, colour corrections by room direction, mirror repositioning, and pooja room relocation (if space allows) are all non-structural. Complete Vastu compliance in a fixed apartment layout is not always achievable — but significant improvement always is.
Is Vastu relevant for Mangalore homes?
Vastu Shastra is an integrated part of traditional architecture across Karnataka, including coastal Karnataka. Tulu Nadu traditional homes (nalukettu style) and Mangalorean tile-roof houses were historically designed with Vastu principles. Suntew's Mangalore team is experienced in Vastu application for both contemporary apartments and traditional home renovations.
Do I need a separate Vastu consultant or can my interior designer handle it?
A good interior designer who serves South Indian families should know the fundamental Vastu principles and be able to apply them in the design — without requiring a separate Vastu consultant for standard residential projects. Suntew applies Vastu as standard on all projects. Complex cases (unusual home orientations, significant Vastu doshas) may benefit from a dedicated Vastu pandit consultation.
